Biographical Note

Born on August 6, 1825, in Beaver County  next hit, Pennsylvania, John James Porter attended Princeton University, concentrating on art. He then attended the New York Academy of Design and abroad in Europe. In 1854, Porter made a tour of the American South where he met and married his wife, Eliza Frances Jameson. Eliza died sometime before 1860, and Porter resumed his tour of Virginia. He later married Carrie E. Brown in 1860, and settled in previous hit Rappahannock  next hit previous hit County  next hit. During his time in the south, Porter painted portraits of many prominent Virginians, including Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury, General Robert E. Lee, and Governor William Smith. John James Porter died June 19 ,1888, and was buried in Culpeper previous hit County .
